Although many companies are flying unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in support of their commercial operations, ERM has encountered few that are harnessing the power of the data that is available. There is virtually no risk of FAA sanctions from flying UAS commercially without a Section 333 exemption, but it is quite another thing to extract meaningful data from the images obtained.
And we are talking about BIG DATA. Data from a single large photogrammetry survey can reach 100 gigabytes (GB). Several GB of data are generated even on small surveys. Some of the data files, like orthomosaic images, are so large that most PC software cannot display them. And they certainly cannot be e-mailed to anyone. Fortunately, several cloud-based services are available to view and share the files over the internet.
Take a look at some of these amazing orthomosaic images. Keep in mind that these are images of the 3D point cloud model, not just a stitching together of pictures.
