The Value of Perspective from a UAS

compare2Explosives Risk Managers LLC recently obtained an image of the top of a highwall taken by a hobbyist unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operator.  The image shows an unstable area where topsoil is falling into the pit.

The mine has been monitoring this area for some time but obtaining a good view of the area has been challenging.  It is inaccessible from the top and the best imaging they could obtain is shown on the left.  The image taken by the UAS is on the right.

The mine foreman called the UAS image “100 times” better than the image he had taken with a traditional SLR camera and telephoto lens from across the pit.  Indeed, the UAS provides a perspective and detail that otherwise would be unattainable.
